How to Adjust the Steering Wheel and Seat

Being in the driver's seat should be comfortable and safe. Unless you properly adjust the driver's seat and steering wheel you might not be. Use the following tips to help you properly adjust the steering wheel and seat so your next driving experience will be both comfortable and safe.

  • Make your adjustments to the driver's seat and steering wheel before you ever turn the key to start the engine. You should properly strap and buckle the seat prior to making your adjustments.

  • Put your hands on the steering wheel as you sit up in the driver's seat. Adjust the height of the seat if the steering wheel is too low or too high. Move the seat up or back if you have trouble reaching the steering wheel. Obtain additional support for your lower back if needed by using a lumbar support pad or pillow. Many of the new vehicles have lumbar support seats for your driving comfort.

  • Pick up your right foot and see if you can easily reach the gas and brake pedals. If not, readjust the driver's seat as you must be able to access both of these pedals quickly for complete driving safety.

  • Move the steering wheel up or down and move it closer or further back to have a comfortable hold on the steering wheel. Most vehicles have a tilt wheel for comfort or for those with very short arms or long arms.

  • Check your vehicle mirrors once you feel you have your seat and steering wheel properly adjusted. You need to see clearly out of both side mirrors and your rear view mirror once you have established the correct location for your driver's seat and steering wheel.

  • Save your driver's seat position, steering wheel position and mirror locations if your car has features to auto adjust. Use the adjust feature if your car has it, to save you time and trouble resetting and readjusting everything.
