How to Contest a Dallas Tollway Violation

Navigating the Dallas tollway can be a minor annoyance to daily drivers, but erroneous tollway violations can quickly add up to an expensive problem. The system links license plate numbers with TollTag accounts, which are then debited and issued a bill when the balance becomes negative. Violations occur when your vehicle is detected passing through a gate without a TollTag. There are several reasons a violation may be issued to you in error and just a few simple steps to follow in contesting a Dallas tollway violation.

Things You'll Need

  • NTTA invoice number
  • License plate number
  • Driver's license number
  • Supporting documentation, such as a police report or vehicle-transfer notice
  • Create an account at the North Texas Tollway Authority's website by providing your invoice number and license plate number. If you do not wish to create a TollTag account, call the NTTA Customer Service Center at 972-818-NTTA (6882) to contest a violation.

  • Provide supporting documentation to back up your dispute. If the car was sold, you must provide the buyer's name and address and have filed written notice of the transfer. If it was leased or rented, submit a copy of the rental agreement. Stolen vehicles require a copy of a police report.

  • Submit a Vehicle Transfer Notification (Form VTR-346) if you are contesting based upon the sale of the vehicle. This protects you from liability for tolls and other charges even if the buyer has not legally transferred the title. Notification must be submitted within 30 days from the sale date, not the date of your toll violation. You may submit this form online through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles or download and mail the paper form.
