How to Avoid Falling Asleep at the Wheel

Falling asleep at the wheel can be as dangerous as drunk driving, and causes several fatal crashes every year. Here's a quick guide to avoiding this common but dangerous driving error. Now, we are not advocating driving when you are tired. If you are tired, pull over. But if you feel you have to drive, here are some useful tips.
1. Feel free to drink things with caffeine, like coffee and energy drinks.
2. If you are going to eat, eat something that be easily eaten while driving - things you can just pop in your mouth. Also, tangy items like citruses will awaken your tastebuds, and then your brain.
3. Play music you can't stand - you'll have a harder time falling asleep if you hate it.
4. Make your snack last longer by eating slowly. The activity will give your mind something to focus on.
5. Roll down the window and let in the cool breeze- the discomfort will keep you awake.
6. Make the position of your driver's seat uncomfortable.
7. Do something that engages more than one sense, like eating or singing, to distract yourself. One good method is to chew gum and blow bubbles.

Remember, if you fall asleep at the wheel, you could get hurt. Avoid the whole situation by pulling over and getting some sleep. And if drowsy driving is a frequent problem for you, consider seeing your doctor as there may be something wrong with your sleep patterns.
