One of the best things about owing an RV is the freedom it provides. RV travel lets you explore somewhere different on every trip. It allows you to get out on the open road and travel to places unknown.
But this freedom does come with some limits. While it’s a romantic notion to simply hop in and go where the wind takes you, the fact is that most RV trips require a bit of planning.
Before each trip it’s necessary to figure out details such as your destination, where you will stay, and what you will do when you get there. Believe it or not, sometimes deciding on a destination is the trickiest part. With so many options out there, how do you know where to go? The best way to make this decision easier is to narrow down your options by first figuring out how far your want to travel. Once you have this info, you can start choosing places that are within this radius.
So, how do you determine the hours or miles that you are willing to travel to reach your destination? Consider the following questions.
The first thing that you must consider is how much time you have available for this trip. If you only have two days, it’s best to choose a destination a few hours or less from your home so you don’t spend a disproportionate amount of time driving. As a general rule, kids are not known for their patience — especially during a long car ride. If this trip is going to be adults only, a trip that is further away might be a good option. After all, sometimes it’s not about the destination but more about the journey. Consider taking the road less traveled and seeing the sights with your friends. Who knows, you may get the chance to try new things that you’ve never considered before.
Your favorite activity can help determine how far you are willing to drive for your vacation. For example, if you want to spend time at the beach and you live two hours from the coast, then you already have a plan. But if you would like to to, say…try your hand at fishing, or hiking, your options have widened. If you want to enjoy a specific pastime, find the places where you can do this activity and let that be your guide.
If you know the direction that you are heading for your vacation, remember to consider the types of roads as well. This will help you determine how long you are willing to drive. Driving on the interstate is vastly different than driving on a mountain road. When planning your destination, be sure to take roads into consideration.
