Innovative Camper Goes Viral

If you’re looking for the ultimate travel trailer, then Edward Bohtlingk has the rig for you. Designed in 1985, this amazing, mobile, holiday house takes “temporary living” to a whole new level. His concept was simple. Use the least space possible for travel, and the most space possible for living. Here’s what he came up with. Meet “De Markies – The Awning.”

This one-of-a-kind, transforming trailer offers hard sidewalls that open with accordion style action. Each wall serves a distinct purpose. The first provides a transparent window-like experience. This side of the unit is the perfect space for an open living room. This innovative camper is equipped with folding tables and chairs that pop down for comfortable lounging areas. The awning can be open to the weather, or closed to protect its residents. The opposite awning folds down with an opaque covering. This side serves as the perfect sleeping area, or offers more living space.

This award-winning project has left no stone unturned. It provides a stove, fridge, shower, toilet and storage just like any other RV on the market.

Unfortunately for us, this trailer is not available in the current market, which begs the question, “WHY?” Innovation and technology are at an all-time high, but few new RVs even reflect these principles.

Here are a few other designs that would be interesting to see:

The Mehrzeller looks like a series of geometric cells fused onto a trailer, but inside it’s camping-meets-the-Jetsons.

Here’s a campervan for a whole new century. This caravan-concept RV offers two units in one.

Want something SLICK, SPORTY and LIGHTWEIGHT? Here’s the CR-1. The first concept-RV made of lightweight carbon fiber. Light like a race car, but heavy on the luxury.

While inspiration seems to be plentiful, we are yet to see any concrete results. I don’t know about you, but I am ready to see something exciting in the marketplace. It’s time for the accordion camper to arise!
