How to Switch a Car Title

Transferring the title of a vehicle from a previous owner to a new owner allows the new owner to have proof of legal vehicle ownership. Some of the information on the title that shows this proof includes the owner's name, address, date ownership began, vehicle identification number, vehicle make and the vehicle model. Title transfers are processed through the local Department of Motor Vehicles.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle title
  • Odometer statement
  • Bill of sale
  • Sign the title under the "Seller" category if you are selling the vehicle. Sign the title under "Buyer" if you are purchasing the vehicle.

  • Sign the "Odometer Statement" to confirm the actual mileage of the vehicle.

  • Complete, sign and date the "Bill of Sale" to show further proof of purchase.

  • Visit the local office of the Department of Motor Vehicles and provide the title, odometer statement and bill of sale. Tell the clerk you want to transfer the title. The clerk will tell you how much the transfer fee is and file the documents. The clerk will also issue a new title in the new owner's name.
