How to Replace a Lost Car Title in Mississippi

A car title is an important document. A Mississippi car title (a secure document printed by the Mississippi Department of Revenue) is necessary for licensing a vehicle for the first time after purchasing it and when you sell it in the future. If your car title is lost, you will need to get a replacement. States vary in the process for getting a replacement car title. While the process is difficult in some states, replacing a lost car title in Mississippi is relatively straightforward.

  • Fill out form 78-006, “Application for Replacement Certificate of Title.” The form is available on the Mississippi Department of Revenue website or at your local county tax collector’s office. There also is a fast-track option for getting a replacement title if you’re in a hurry. A different form (78-026) is available if you would like to expedite the process. With either form you will have to provide information such as the vehicle make, model, vehicle identification number, title number, owner’s name and address on the application form. If a lien holder is shown on the original title, a lien release must be included with the application.

  • Submit the form and fees for the Mississippi car replacement title by mailing them to the Mississippi Department of Revenue Title Bureau, P.O. Box 1383, Jackson, MS 39215. The fee is $9 for a regular replacement title or $39 for an expedited title as of September 2010.

  • Wait for the replacement title to come by postal mail. Once you receive it, keep it in a secure location.
