How Do I Get My Car Title From Maryland Online?

If you've ever waited in line at the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), you'll be glad to know that if you need a duplicate car title, you can avoid the hassle of standing in line again---you can accomplish the task with just a few online clicks. If your current title is lost or damaged, you need a replacement title if you want to sell or gift your car.

Things You'll Need

  • Maryland car registration
  • Maryland driver's license
  • Credit card or check
  • Check the address on the car registration. The Maryland MVA will mail the title to this address. If this is not where you currently live, you must first submit a registration change of address, which may also be completed online (See References).

  • Locate the name and address of the secured party (bank, finance company, etc.), if applicable. If you have a loan on the car, the lien information will be transferred to the new title. If you have paid off the loan, you must show proof to the Maryland MVA to have the lienholder removed from the title; it will not happen automatically.

  • Find the Title Replacement page at mva.maryland.gov (See References). You can find this page by typing "online replacement title" in the Search box, or by clicking on the "MVA Online" button.

  • Complete the application. The information you need is on the registration, your license, the co-owner's license (if applicable), and the lien company paperwork (if applicable). The final step on the application will ask for payment (credit card or check). As of early 2010, the fee is $20.
