How to Sign a Maryland Auto Title

An auto title is a document that shows legal proof of ownership for a vehicle. If you have your car titled in Maryland and you are selling the vehicle you have to sign over the title to the new owner. This has to be done even if you are just trading in the vehicle at a car dealership. Signing your Maryland auto title is very easy to do. In fact, it is similar to signing an auto title in other states.

  • Look at the front of your Maryland auto title to verify the names listed on it. If there is more than one name then each person must sign the title. You cannot sign the title if your name is not listed on it.

  • Flip over your Maryland auto title to the back. There are four section on the back. Look for the “Assignment of Ownership” section, which is typically the first section.

  • Locate the line that reads “Signature of Seller(s).” Each person whose name is listed on the front of the title as an owner must sign on this line. Print your name underneath the signature.
