The diesels in heavy duty trucks are getting to dangerous power levels. Even lugging a 6800-pound truck, the Duramax's 660 lb-ft of torque mean some serious get-up-and-go, enough oomph to make you think you can thread a few needles on the freeway until you realize that this truck is over 21 feet long. Look out! The best thing about this truck is imagining the looks on people's faces when surge away from them so quickly in a barge a half block long.

Lots and lots of miles in this one, and I loved it. The diesel was strong and even relatively fuel efficient, returning 16 mpg in two-wheel-drive freeway driving while offering 500-plus miles of range. And such torque—I actually did a burnout in reverse! (If you don't believe me, go check the intersection of Chain Lake Road and South Branch Road in South Branch, Michigan for twin black lines of truth.)

This sucker was long (a crew cab plus an eight-foot bed will do that) and had the turning radius of a beached whale. Parking it was an exercise in futility; I learned quickly to take advantage of the vast swaths of empty real estate to the back of the parking lot. But this did nothing to sour me on this bad boy. If I needed a brand-new pickup, I know to which company I'd be writing my check: General Motors.
