JARED GALL

The MKX gets knocked for being heavy and expensive, but the most important aspect of this vehicle is that it is good. It's competent, it's roomy, it's stylish—I dig the full-width brake light—and it represents a level of engineering that Ford needs to achieve with its other vehicles. When you go from an Escape or an Explorer into an Edge or this Lincoln twin, it's tough to believe they are from the same company. If Ford and Lincoln can whittle price and weight down, I'll be giving this high marks in a future 5Best.

ERIK JOHNSON

Praise first: The MKX looks nice. Freeway cruising is a confident, smooth affair, with all bumps, ridges, and potholes proving little problem for the soft, Lincoln-tuned suspension. Forward visibility is fantastic. I even like the fake wood.

Confusion last: Why would anyone buy this over a wagon, which provides similar interior space? Or, failing that, its twin, the Ford Edge, which is cheaper and looks nearly identical? And, finally, what's with the interior? The MKX's interior isn't even in the same league, much less ballpark, as its luxury competition; the acres of silver plastic look terrible. More fake wood, please.
