Review

Introduction

The tC appeared in late 2004 as a 2005 model with the intention of luring to Scion showrooms those who might not consider the more upright and funky looks of the xA and xB hatchbacks, even though technically the tC is itself a three-door hatchback. (The xA has since been replaced by the xD.)

The only engine is a 161-hp, 2.4-liter inline-four that runs on 87-octane gasoline. There are two trim levels, the tC or the less expensive tC Spec Package, and either can be paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. That might sound simple, but Scion offers a long list of additional dealer accessories for maximum customization.

Verdict

The tC offers decent performance and Toyota reliability at a reasonable price, but the main attraction for most buyers is the ability to configure their car in a unique way.

What’s New for 2008

This year marks the first styling update for the tC. Outside, there’s a new front fascia, which includes restyled headlights and upper and lower grilles, and there’s a revised taillight design. The interior gets some new silver accents, new seat fabric, and a Pioneer subwoofer. There are a few paint color changes as well. Azure Pearl, Black Cherry Pearl, and Nautical Blue Metallic are out, and Wave Line Pearl, Sizzling Crimson Mica, and Blue Ribbon Metallic are in. iPod connectivity for the base model radio is now standard.

Scion offers a special “Release Series” edition of the tC each year. For 2008, Release Series 4.0 comes with a body kit, Alcantara seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Räzo shift knob. Plus, there’s a number plate to tell you which of the 2300-unit production run belongs to you.
