Introduction

Launched in 2005, the front-drive Fusion gave Ford something it had lacked for many years: a car that could contend with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in the intensely competitive mid-size-sedan market.

We’ve noted various demerits in several road tests—oversized exterior panel gaps, ergonomic interior oddities such as climate controls located not far from the floor, automatic transmissions with no shift-for-yourself option, and programming that prioritizes fuel-economy ratings above drivability. But there are compelling strong suits: an exceptionally strong unibody derived from the Mazda 6 platform; decisive handling and good all-around road manners; available all-wheel drive, which is still a rarity in this class; and distinctive good looks.

Verdict

In a market segment where cautious exterior design predominates, a little bold styling goes a long way.

What’s New for 2008

Ford’s big news for almost all its 2008 vehicles is the availability of the new Sync infotainment and communications system, which was developed in partnership with Microsoft and is inexpensive at $395. Other new-for-’08 options include a Sport Appearance package, a rear parking assist, and a keypad entry system.
