Tacoma Gear Shifter Removal

The gear shifter on a Toyota Tacoma is used by the driver to shift the transmission into each gear. If you ever experience transmission problems in your Tacoma, then the transmission may need to be removed from the vehicle.To do that, the transmission linkage needs to be removed as well, which includes the gear shifter. You can remove the gear shifter in your Tacoma in just under an hour with some basic tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Unscrew the three screws holding the center console in place around the gear shifter using the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the center console towards the back of the cab with both hands, then lift it up and off of the shifter.

  • Remove the shift boot from the perimeter of the shifter using the Phillips screwdriver. Lift it up and off of the shifter and set it to the side. Lift off the dust cover underneath the boot with both hands.

  • Push down on the shift lever cap underneath the dust cover with both hands. Turn the shift lever cap counter clockwise with your hands and then lift it up and off of the shifter.

  • Lift the shifter straight up and off of the transmission.
