What Causes Car Brakes to Grind?

The brakes on a car begin to grind when the brake pads are completely worn down. No pads means the metal components of the brake calipers are now dragging against the disc, which will causing them severe damage.

Function

  • Brake pads are contained within a brake caliper. When the brake pedal is applied, the pads are pressed against the rotor to slow the car down.

Effects

  • The brake pads wear down over time and will eventually be too thin to work. Grinding brakes means the pads should have already been replaced.

Time Frame

  • Brake pads often need to be replaced every three years to prevent grinding brakes. The exact life span varies with driving habits and the landscape the car is driven in.

Warning

  • Grinding brakes will cut grooves into the brake discs, which leads to the discs needing to be replaced.

Prevention/Solution

  • No car should be driven when the brakes are grinding. The brake pads must be immediately replaced.
