How to Replace Rear Disc Brakes in a Nissan Sentra

The Nissan Sentra may have either disc or drum brakes in the rear of the car. Disc brakes are popular due to their efficient stopping power and ease with which you can replace them. Read further to learn how to replace the rear disc brakes in your Sentra because you may be surprised to learn that it's not as difficult as you may think.

Things You'll Need

  • Car jack
  • Torque wrench
  • 2 Rear disc brake pads
  • 2 Shims
  • 2 Retainer springs
  • Brake fluid
  • Silicone based grease
  • Lift the rear of the vehicle off the ground using a car jack. Balance the vehicle on all sides to prevent it from tipping. Keep children and animals out of the vicinity while replacing the rear disc brakes on your Sentra.

  • Disconnect the parking brake cable bracket bolt. Remove the pin bolts and take off the body of the caliper. Slide out the pad springs, brake pads and shims.

  • Rotate the piston clockwise with needle nose pliers until it retreats back into the caliper body. Lubricate the area of the mounting support that touches the brake pad using silicone based grease.

  • Replace the pads, shims and retainer springs with the new ones. Lay the caliper body on the mounting support. Secure it by tightening the pin bolts between 28 to 38 ft. lb.

  • Reattach the wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground, and then bleed the brake system if necessary. Replace the brake fluid if it falls below the recommended level.
