How to Install a Chevelle Windshield

Paying a mechanic to install a new windshield in your Chevrolet Chevelle can be an expensive proposition. Although it may seem rather daunting, you can save yourself a large amount of money by installing the windshield yourself. When tackling this job, you should have someone help remove and install the windshield from the vehicle. The tools you need for the job are likely ones that you already have; if not, you can pick them up at an auto parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp blade
  • Windshield sealant
  • Windshield gasket
  • Nylon cord

Removal

  • Place a dust sheet over the hood of your Chevelle to help protect the body work when you lift out and install the windshield.

  • Use a sharp blade to cut the rubber trim from around the windshield. Make an incision at the top of the trim, then cut around the trim, moving clockwise, and pull it away from the windshield. Be sure to remove all of the trim.

  • Enter the vehicle and press the windshield gently out of the frame. Have someone standing outside the vehicle to help take the weight of the glass.

Installation

  • Place a layer of windshield sealant around the edges of the windshield. Attach the gasket to the bottom of the windshield at the dead center. Connect it so that the heavy part of the gasket is on the inside and the slit is on the outside.

  • Tie a nylon cord around the outer groove of the windshield. Lift the windshield onto the windshield frame. Press the windshield firmly against the frame for a few minutes to allow the seal to set in place.

  • Pull the cord across the bottom of the windshield from inside the vehicle to set the rubber lip in place. Clean the windshield and the inside of the vehicle.
