How to Replace a Volvo Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on a Volvo delivers the fuel from the gas tank and sends it to the engine. Should the fuel pump fail, then the engine won't get the fuel it needs to run and the Volvo isn't going to drive anywhere. To fix the problem, you have to replace the fuel pump so that the engine functions properly. This takes at least an hour to do, and it doesn't require any specials tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wood blocks
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set

  • Lift the rear of the Volvo with the jack and put it on jack stands. Disconnect the fuel filler neck from the gas tank with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Put the jack under the tank with a wood block between the jack head and the tank. Unbolt the gas tank from the body with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then lower the jack down so the gas tank is on the ground.

  • Remove the lock ring on the gas tank holding the fuel pump and sending unit to the tank with the brass drift and the brass hammer. Pull the fuel pump out of the sending unit and the gas tank with your hands.

  • Install the replacement fuel pump into the sending unit and the tank. Reinstall the lock ring on the tank with the brass drift and brass hammer. Lift the gas tank back up into the chassis and bolt it in place with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the fuel lines and electrical connections to the fuel pump with your hands.
