How to Remove 7.3 Powerstroke Turbo

The turbo on a 7.4 L Powerstroke diesel engine takes the exhaust gasses created by the engine and uses them to spin a turbine. This turbine outputs pressurized air, which increases the horsepower output of the engine, as well as the torque. If the turbo fails because of a spun bearing or other internal component problem, then you need to remove it from the engine. This way you can determine if the entire turbo needs to be removed or if it can be rebuilt.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Pop the hood and let the engine cool down. Unbolt the air intake tube assembly from the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Remove all of the intake tubing and connections from the alternator with the ratchet and set them to the side. Unbolt the hose clamps on the exhaust side of the turbo with the ratchet and pull it to the side as well.

  • Unbolt the turbo exhaust inlet pipe connection to the passenger side exhaust manifold using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the bolts holding the turbo to the driver's side exhaust manifold. Unbolt the driver's side engine lift hook from the top of the engine with the ratchet.

  • Unbolt the compressor manifold from the engine with the ratchet. Unbolt the turbo pedestal assembly from the cylinder block with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unplug the electrical connections on the turbo with your hands. Unbolt the oil tube connection with the ratchet as well.

  • Pull the turbo out of the engine bay carefully using both hands to support the weight.
