The speedometer on a modern Chevrolet is all electronic as of 2011, and you cannot remove just the speedometer from the gauge cluster assembly. Older Chevrolet vehicles have individual gauges, however, including an individual speedometer. These older cars and trucks have a speedometer cable that connects the transmission to the speedometer gauge. If you want to unhook the speedometer on a Chevrolet, you must remove the speedometer cable and unplug any lighting and wiring to the gauge.
Unscrew the trim panel below the steering column using a Phillips screwdriver. Reach around behind the dashboard, then push down the headlight knob retaining button and pull off the button.
Unscrew the bezel from around the dashboard with your Phillips screwdriver, then pull the bezel off the dash. Unscrew the cluster retainer from the dashboard with the Phillips screwdriver.
Reach behind the dashboard, and locate the speedometer cable, which plugs into the back of the speedometer gauge. Push down the clip on the cable, and pull out the speedometer cable from the back of the gauge.
Unscrew the speedometer from the dashboard with the Phillips screwdriver, then unplug the lighting harness from the backside with your hands.
