How to Remove a Steering Box From an S-10

The steering box on a Chevrolet S-10 connects the steering column and the steering linkage, transferring the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the side-to-side turning of the wheels. This steering box has gears inside, and as the wheels get turned, eventually those gears can wear down. If your steering feels loose and you've eliminated some of your other options, you can remove the steering box to have it rebuilt or replace it entirely.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Pitman arm puller
  • Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels are straight. Set the parking brake. Put the jack under the front crossmember on the S-10 and lift up the front of the truck. Put jack stands under the frame and then remove the jack.

  • Locate the steering box on the driver's side of the frame, just forward of the motor. Unbolt the pitman arm from the steering linkage with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the pitman arm from the steering box with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Install the pitman arm puller on the steering box side of the pitman arm, then tighten the puller with the ratchet to pop the pitman arm off of the steering box.

  • Unbolt the steering intermediate shaft at the top of the steering box with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Pull the intermediate shaft off of the steering box.

  • Remove the nuts holding the steering box to the frame with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Hold the steering box with one hand and then pull the bolts out of the frame with the other hand. Lower the steering box off the frame and take it out from under the truck.
