How do I Remove the Left Front Axle Seal on a 2005 Chevy 2500 HD?

Some models of 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD trucks are equipped with four-wheel drive. These have a pair of front axles that connect the front wheel hubs to the front differential. The connection between the left front axle and the differential has an oil seal which helps keep the oil in the differential in place. If the differential starts to leak, then the oil seal needs to be replaced. So first, the left front axle seal needs to be removed.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Pry bar
  • 1/2-inch breaker bar
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Assistant
  • Slide hammer with seal removal adapter
  • Park the GMC and put on the parking brake. Lift the front wheels off the ground with the jack and place the jack stands under the frame. Take off the left front wheel with a tire iron.

  • Tap off the dust cap on the center of the rotor using the flathead screwdriver and the hammer. Hold the brake rotor steady by putting a pry bar between the studs. Unbolt the axle from the hub with the 1/2-inch breaker bar and sockets.

  • Put your assistant in the cab and have them hold down the brake pedal. Unbolt the inside of the axleshaft from the differential with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Drop the axle down from the differential and then pull it out of the hub and away from the truck.

  • Put a drain pan under the front differential. Remove the drain plug on the differential with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Install the slide hammer with the seal puller adapter. Hit the slide hammer until the seal comes out of the differential.
