How to Remove a Blinker Lever on a 1989 Chevy

The blinker lever on a 1989 Chevrolet is a multi-function switch, designed to activate the turn signal lights as well as the cruise control functions. When this switch fails, the cruise control and turn signals will cease to work correctly. This could potentially cause an accident in the case of the cruise control, and it's important to fix it as soon as possible. To do so, the old switch must be removed from the vehicle. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1989 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, but the process is similar for other 1989 Chevrolet vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Snap-ring pliers
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Steering wheel puller
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pull off the horn button on the steering wheel and unplug the wiring from the backside with your hands. Remove the snap ring on the inside of the steering wheel using the snap-ring pliers. Remove the center bolt on the steering wheel with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Install the steering wheel puller onto the steering wheel and tighten down the center bolt on the puller until the steering wheel comes off the steering column. Pull off the trim panel around the steering column.

  • Put the head of the flat-head screwdriver into the lockplate cover slot on the side of the steering column and pry it off the column. Remove the lockplate using the flat-head screwdriver. Unscrew the turn signal lever from the column with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Unscrew the hazard switch from the column and set it to the side. Remove the remaining screws around the lever using the Phillips screwdriver. Push the lever down into the housing and then pull it straight up out of the column.
