How to Connect a Remote Starter Switch to a GM Starter

Remote starter switches are very handy, especially when performing tasks under the hood that require cranking the engine, such as testing compression, resetting the distributor and adjusting valves. Depending on the location of the starter solenoid, clipping the remote starter lead onto the solenoid activation wire can be a challenge. This is especially true for General Motors vehicles.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Raise the hood of the vehicle and disconnect the negative battery cable with an adjustable wrench. Jack up the front of the car and install jack stands. Lower the car securely onto the stands.

  • Clip one of the leads onto the starter solenoid lead that contains the purple wire. In most cases, GM uses a purple wire to activate the solenoid, and the solenoid is built on top of the starter. It may be difficult to reach the solenoid on some models.

  • Install the other wire lead of the remote starter to the battery. Be certain the key is off and the car is in park. Press the remote starter button to crank the car.
