The gas tank on a 1998 Ford Explorer stores the fuel used by the engine. Inside the fuel tank is the fuel sender and pump, both of which may require maintenance at some point or another. When they do, the tank has to come out so that you can properly access those components. Although it's awkward to do, removing the gas tank is not technically difficult and can be done in about an hour with the proper tools.
Crawl underneath the SUV and locate the fuel tank next to the rear axle. Unbolt the skid plate, if so equipped, with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
Remove the fuel filler neck from the gas tank with a flat head screwdriver. Place a wood block on the head of a jack and lift it up until the wood contacts the base of the gas tank.
Unbolt the straps securing the tank to the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Slowly lower the tank until you can access the top of the gas tank. Remove the fuel lines from the sender with the flat head screwdriver and unplug the wiring. Lower the tank the rest of the way, holding it steady with one hand.
