Having a stuck ignition key in your Pontiac Grand Prix can present many problems. Leaving your ignition key stuck in your vehicle could pose the risk of having your Grand Prix stolen if you do not fix the problem immediately. A small locking solenoid that is controlled by your transmission’s gear release button can lock your ignition key and the ignition key cylinder, preventing you from removing the key. The problem is usually traced back to a faulty gear release button or the locking solenoid inside the steering column.
Locate the small round cover underneath the right side of the steering column. The small cover underneath the steering column is about the size of a quarter.
Remove the small cover underneath the steering column by prying it off with a flat head screwdriver, exposing the access hole to the locking solenoid’s manual release mechanism.
Place the vehicle’s transmission in the park or “P” position.
Insert the screwdriver inside the hole until you reach the manual release mechanism for the ignition lock solenoid. (ref#1)
Rotate your key to the off position and remove it from the ignition cylinder.
