The thermal fan clutch on a Ford Bronco 2 is mounted to the front snout of the water pump and is responsible for cooling the radiator. It does this by using the rotation of the water pump to spin the fan. The thermal fan clutch controls the speed of the fan based on the radiant temperature, and when it goes out, it stops cooling the vehicle efficiently. To fix the problem, the thermal fan clutch must first be removed, and then replaced.
Pop the hood. Remove the fan shroud on the core support using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Remove the air intake tubing using the flathead screwdriver.
Look behind the fan shroud and locate the water pump pulley. Place the fan clutch pulley holder onto the pulley, then install the fan clutch nut wrench onto the fan clutch nut just forward of the pulley.
Turn the fan clutch nut wrench clockwise to loosen the reverse-thread nut, then pull the fan clutch and fan off the front of the engine. Unbolt the fan from the thermal fan clutch using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
