How to Remove & Replace a Grand Am Ignition Lock

The ignition lock cylinder on Pontiac Grand Am is responsible for locking the ignition switch in place so that the switch can't be removed and the car stolen. When this breaks, you may have problems with your ignition switch as well, which can cause difficulties starting the car. To fix the issue and get your car working normally again, you must remove the original ignition lock cylinder and replace it with a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench set
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Hex-head wrench set
  • Pop the hood. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery using an open-end wrench. Remove the trim panel around the instrument panel using the Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Locate the small detent (lever) in the ignition lock cylinder around the switch, which is located on the side closest to the radio. Put the hex-head key into the detent and push it in place.

  • Put the key in the ignition. Turn the key so that it's in the "on" position. Push down the hex-head key in the detent and pull the ignition lock cylinder and key out in one piece. Take the key out of the ignition.

  • Insert the key into the replacement lock cylinder and turn it to the "on" position. Put the lock cylinder on the ignition switch with your hands, then remove the key from the ignition. Reinstall the trim panel around the instrument panel using the Phillips-head screwdriver, and the negative terminal on the battery using an open-end wrench.
