How to Remove the Power Steering Pressure Hose on a Sonata

A power steering pump on a Hyundai Sonata takes the rotational energy from the engine and turns it into hydraulic power to push and pull the steering rack. Because it's a hydraulic system, there is a high-pressure and low-pressure line, and if the high-pressure hose gets a leak or a hole in it, then you need to remove and replace the line, otherwise the steering won't work. First, though, you have to take it off.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Flashlight
  • Drain pan
  • Line wrench set
  • Lift up the front of the vehicle using the jack and secure it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is completely secure on the jack stands before you crawl underneath it.

  • Place a drain pan underneath the power steering rack, then use the flashlight to find the power steering line. Attach the line wrench to one side of the line and crack the line loose, just turning the wrench a hair to relieve pressure in the system. Allow the fluid to exit the tube. If it doesn't, open the line a touch more with the wrench.

  • Unscrew the line completely using the line wrench once the fluid has exited the tube, then unscrew the other side of the line on the steering rack itself, also using the line wrench.
