How to Change the Light Switch on a Chevy Pickup

The light switch on your truck is responsible for turning on the headlights, marker lights and running lights on your Chevrolet truck, and it's not indestructible. If the headlights overload the switch, it must be replaced with a factory replacement; otherwise, you won't have any lighting and could get pulled over. Fixing the switch should take about 30 minutes. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement light switch
  • Place your foot on the brake and turn the ignition to the "on" position. Shift the gear lever down to the lowest position, and tilt the column down to its lowest position.

  • Pull off the dashboard bezel that goes around the stereo and gauge cluster using your hands to free the clips. Unplug the wiring in the back of the bezel with your hands, then place it to the side. Before proceeding further, place the vehicle back in park and turn off the ignition.

  • Lay the dash bezel on a work surface, face down. The light switch is held in place by two plastic tabs that tend to be fragile. Place the flat-head screwdriver between the plastic tab and the light switch, releasing the tab in the process. Then pull out the light switch.

  • Clip the replacement switch in place using your hands. Then get back in the vehicle, place your foot on the brake and turn the ignition to the "on" position. Shift the gear lever down to the lowest position, and tilt the column down to its lowest position.

  • Plug the dash bezel wiring back together using your hands and push the bezel back onto the dashboard using your hands to secure the clips. Place the vehicle back in park and turn off the ignition.

  • Turn on the light switch and walk around the vehicle to make sure that that all the lights work.
