How to Hoist an Engine

Engines are the lifeblood of a vehicle, and sometimes they need to be removed. Be it for maintenance, replacement, or even just to clean it up, you need to hoist an engine to remove it from a vehicle. It's not that difficult, it just takes time. For the purposes of this article, we're going to assume that the engine is completely disconnected from the transmission, the wiring is removed and the engine is completely free from anything that would hinder it from being taken from the engine bay.

Things You'll Need

  • Engine hoist
  • Heavy-duty chain
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Wrenches
  • Find a spot on the rear of the engine where you can bolt a section of chain. This is typically an exhaust manifold bolt, the intake manifold or somewhere else that is sturdy.

  • Find a spot on the front of the engine where you can bolt the other section of chain. It should be opposite the other bolt so that the engine can be level when it is lifted. The chain should also be loose enough that the hoist can be hooked onto it. If you like, you can also duplicate this chain process on the other side so that the chains form an "x" shape across the engine.

  • Adjust the hoist so that it is set up for the correct weight of the engine. If you do not know the weight of the engine, adjust it for a heavier engine as opposed to a lighter one.

  • Hook the hoist to the chain so that it is centered. The weight should be balanced across the chain(s).

  • Jack the hoist up in the air, raising the engine. At first, go slowly so that you're sure the engine isn't hung up on any leftover wiring or plumbing that you may have forgotten to remove. Then jack the engine up so that it clears the engine bay.

  • Carefully move the hoist so that the engine is clear of the vehicle. Once it's clear, lower the hoist slowly so that the engine is just a few inches off of the ground. Then move the hoist and engine to where you want the engine to be placed. Lower the hoist completely and disconnect the engine.
