How to Install an Accord Remote Start

Honda offers remote starter kits for Accords through its dealership parts network. There are also many varieties of aftermarket remote starter kits available for Accords. Whichever kit you use, it is best if the Accord already has a factory keyless remote system. Your remote starter will allow you to turn the car and some accessories on without being in the vehicle, but you cannot actually put the car in gear and drive until you put the key into the ignition and turn it to the on position.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver set
  • Wire cutters
  • Accord owner's manual
  • Digital multi-meter
  • Soldering iron and solder
  • Heat gun
  • Electrical tape
  • Safety gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Start the Accord, ensuring that all lights and accessories are in proper working order before you begin the installation. Everything must be in proper working order to complete a successful installation.

  • Thoroughly read the instructions that came with your remote starter kit before you begin. Different kits have different features. You should familiarize yourself with any procedures unique to your kit before you begin.

  • Disarm the anti-theft system on your Accord. Do this by pressing the unlock button on your keyless entry fob, then physically inserting the key into the driver's door and turning it to the unlock position. Check your owner's manual to see if your Accord is equipped with a passive anti-theft system. Most Accords are. This system prevents anyone from hot-wiring your car or tampering with the ignition switch. If your Accord has it, you will need a transponder bypass before you can proceed with the installation. See References for a complete guide to transponder bypasses.

  • Remove the panel beneath the steering wheel. Inside you will find the connections you need to wire the remote starter to. These include the power, ignition, starter, accessory, parking light and brake wires. Put on the safety gloves and goggles, then identify each wire using the digital multi-meter and Accord owner's manual. You may have more than one wire in some bundles. If so, use a relay to connect multiple wires from the same bundle after you have disconnected the battery.

  • Disconnect the battery, then make all connections with the kit. Solder the connections. After the solder has cooled, secure the connections with electrical tape.

  • Reconnect the battery. Test the remote start and all lights and accessories before replacing the panel under the steering wheel. If any system does not work, recheck the connection and secure it properly. Once everything tests properly, replace the panel covers and drive the car.
