How to Replace a 2002 Chrysler Ignition Switch

Problems starting a 2002 Chrysler vehicle usually stem from the starter, battery or alternator. In some cases, however, the culprit is instead the ignition switch. Not designed for easy replacement, it is necessary to remove a large portion of the steering column to properly access it. New switches are available from larger auto parts stores or directly from a Chrysler dealership.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench or socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • New ignition switch
  • Loosen the nut on the negative cable to the Chrysler's battery using a wrench or socket set. Wiggle the cable bracket while you lift it from the battery pole. This removes any chance of the engine starting while working on it.

  • Reach under the steering column, and locate the recessed screws in the housing underneath. Carefully insert a screwdriver and remove the screws, then lift off the two housing pieces.

  • Release the clips at the back of the steering wheel cover, and remove it. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the retaining screw and disconnect the car horn wire. Locate the center steering wheel nut that holds it to the steering column, and use an adjustable wrench to remove it. Pull the wheel straight back from the column, and set it aside.

  • Remove the screws holding the ignition switch in place, and pull the unit from the steering column. Disconnect the clip holding the ignition wire to the switch, and dispose of the old switch.

  • Attach the ignition wire and clip to the new switch, and check the connection to make sure it is secure. Slip the switch back into the column housing, align the mounting holes, and securely tighten the screws.

  • Reattach the steering wheel, and lock the retaining nut back down. Connect the car horn wire, and clip the wheel cover to the back of the steering wheel. Assemble the housing onto the steering column, and insert the screws. Replace the negative battery wire, and tighten the bracket nut to the battery pole.
