How to Remove the Starter From a 1993 Nissan Pickup

The starter in a 1993 Nissan truck is tucked away between the bell housing and the exhaust manifold on the right side of the vehicle. Unlike trucks that have easily accessible starters, the starter on the Nissan is more difficult to remove. Several parts, such as the skid plate and the exhaust manifold, must be removed to access the Nissan starter.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket, 7/16-inch
  • Socket, 9/16-inch
  • Tire iron
  • Ratchet
  • Wrench, 9/16-inch
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable in the Nissan pickup truck with a 7/16-inch socket and ratchet.

  • Remove the right front wheel with the tire iron provided with the Nissan.

  • Remove the bolts from gravel shield (skid plate) from the lower engine with a 9/16-inch wrench. Slide the shield out of the way.

  • Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield with an adjustable wrench.

  • Remove the right exhaust manifold from the engine block. Use a 9/16-inch socket and ratchet to remove the front bolts and a 9/16-inch wrench for the rear bolts.

  • Remove the positive wire connected to the back of the starter by using an adjustable wrench.

  • Remove the wiring harness from the starter solenoid. The harness plugs directly into the solenoid. Push the center lock on the harness and pull on the harness to remove it from the starter.

  • Remove the two nuts holding the starter to the bell housing with a 9/16-inch socket. Pull the starter toward the front of the vehicle to remove it from the Nissan.
