How to Replace a 2000 Infiniti I30 Starter

When the starter goes bad on the 2000 Infinity I30, the car will not start. It may make a rapid clicking sound, or it may make no noise at all if it is completely dead. In any case, you will have to replace it. This is a project that you can do in your own driveway and avoid paying high labor costs. You probably already have the tools to complete the job, which should take from one to two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
  • Park the car on a level surface and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal.

  • Raise the car with the jack and place a jack stand under the frame near the jacking point for additional safety. Raise the jack stand up to the frame of the car.

  • Put on the safety glasses and crawl under the Infiniti. Remove the air duct assembly by removing the clamps with a flat-head screwdriver. The air duct is the black hose coming out of the black box containing the air filter.

  • Remove the starter harness protector by removing the nuts with a wrench. Unplug the wiring harness from the starter.

  • Remove the bolts from the starter using a socket and ratchet. Pull the starter away from the engine.

  • Install the new starter and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Reconnect the starter wiring harness by plugging it in. Reattach the starter harness protector and tighten the nuts with a wrench.

  • Reconnect the air duct assembly and tighten the clamps with the screwdriver. Remove the jack stand and lower the car to the ground.

  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery terminal and tighten the nut with a wrench. Start the car and test the installation.
