How to Replace the Ignition Switch on a 2000 Neon

The ignition switch in your 2000 Dodge Neon manages the routing of power to the accessories of your car. If the ignition switch on a Neon is failing, your car may stall or not start. When the dashboard warning lights do not remain illuminated after the car stalls, you likely have a failing ignition switch. You can find the ignition switch directly behind the lock cylinder, which does require minimal disassembly of the steering column. Buy a new ignition switch at a Dodge dealership or auto-parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Wrench set
  • Punch or small screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • #10 Torx bit
  • Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal on the battery with a wrench or socket and ratchet. Secure the cable away from the terminal while you work.

  • Turn the ignition cylinder to the “Run” position using your ignition key. Insert a small screwdriver into the release hole under the lock cylinder on the steering column. Press the release lever inside the hole with the screwdriver while pulling the lock cylinder straight out of the dash.

  • Loosen the upper and lower steering column shrouds by removing the retaining screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Press the locking tab beneath the steering column to free the lower steering column shroud. Remove the shroud and set it aside.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition switch by pulling the connector free of the switch. Remove the mounting screw with a #10 Torx bit and ratchet. Press down on the retaining tabs and pull the ignition switch free of the steering column.

  • Turn the ignition switch to the “Run” position before installing it. Press the ignition switch into position until the retaining tabs lock into place. Secure the switch with the mounting screw, tightening it with a #10 Torx bit and ratchet.

  • Connect the wiring harness to the ignition switch by pressing it straight into the connection. Replace the steering column shroud, secure the retaining tab and then replace the retaining screw and tighten it with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Use a small screwdriver to depress the retaining tab for the ignition lock cylinder, pushing up in the hole beneath the steering column. Push the ignition lock cylinder straight into place until the locking tab secures it.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable to the terminal and tighten it securely with a wrench or socket and ratchet. Test the functions of your new ignition switch to be sure it is working correctly.
