How to Install Jeep Liberty Starter

The Jeep Liberty has several engine options available, so there is no single method for installing a starter motor on the Jeep Liberty. This installation description is for the 2.4 liter motor and will walk you through the process of installing a new starter on the engine. The starter motor is responsible for spinning the engine during the starting process, and if it is not working, you will not be able to start the Jeep. If you suspect that the starter in your Jeep is bad, remove it and have it tested at the local auto parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
  • Inch-pound torque wrench
  • Foot-pound torque wrench
  • Raise the front of the Jeep using a jack. Support the Jeep on a set of jack stands and chock the rear wheels.

  • Raise the starter motor into position and install the mounting bolts that hold the starter to the engine block. Tighten the bolts using a socket and ratchet. Torque the bolts to 40 foot-pounds using a torque wrench.

  • Install the battery cable onto the stud that is located on the starter solenoid and torque it to 100 inch-pounds with a torque wrench. Position the cable so that it does not touch anything hot that could melt the insulation.

  • Install the wire connector onto the terminal on the starter solenoid. It will click into place when you push it on to the terminal.

  • Remove the jack stands from under the frame and lower the Jeep to the ground. Connect the battery cables on the battery and test the starter by cranking the engine.
