How to Check the Crankcase Timing on a Caterpillar C15

A routine check of the crankcase timing on a Caterpillar C15 engine is imperative to proper operation and extending the life of your marine engine. It is especially important to check your engine's timing after the engine is stored for at least one month without use. If you experience ignition problems, crankcase timing is often the culprit, so a quick check before investing in costly parts is a wise idea.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Service tool connector
  • Warm water
  • Wire brush
  • O-ring seal
  • Engine oil
  • Consult your owner's manual to determine the timing specifications of your C15 engine. If you are unable to locate your manual, you may contact the CAT support center online (see Resource).

  • Locate the crankcase and disconnect the harness assembly.

  • Remove the bolt and timing sensor from the crankshaft. Check the plastic end of the sensor for signs of wear or contamination.

  • Remove the O-ring seal from the timing sensor.

  • Clean any debris from the face of the timing sensor with a wire brush and warm water.

  • Connect the timing sensor to the service tool connector and check for active diagnostic codes. If no active diagnostic codes are present, the crankcase timing is properly calibrated.

  • Lubricate a new O-ring seal with clean engine oil, and install the seal on the timing sensor. Install the timing sensor in the front housing and replace the bolt. Reconnect the harness assembly.

  • Start the engine to check for proper reconnection.
