Troubleshooting 1997 Lincoln Town Car Climate Control

Ford's 1997 Lincoln Town Car models included an electronic automatic temperature control system (EATC) that maintains the temperature you select, and automatically controls the airflow for comfort. There was no manual system although it is possible to override the automatic controls. Problems with the EATC can be related to the sensor, the controls and air throughput. These kinds of problems can be corrected by following some troubleshooting.

  • Remove anything that may be blocking the EATC sensor module that's located at the center of the dashboard if temperature isn't being maintained. Don't hang handbags, or place accessories like adhesive cell phone holders on the dash because it will stop the sensor from working properly.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "On" position if you continue to have problems with temperature being maintained. The sensor will only work when the Lincoln is on.

  • Push the blue button until 60 degrees shows on the display if the Town Car isn't being cooled enough. This will override the automatic settings and the EATC will, in fact, ignore the 60-degree setting and keep cooling until you press the red button.

  • Remove objects from beneath the front seats if airflow appears bad to the rear seats. There are ducts under the seats that can become blocked. Clear any snow, ice or leaves from the main air grill at the bottom of the windshield. This is a critical part of the EATC and provides the air that's heated or cooled.
