Intermittent Overheating in a PT Cruiser

The Chrysler PT Cruiser was introduced in 2001. It is a retro-styled vehicle available in five-door hatchback and two-door convertible models. Edmunds.com reports that the PT Cruiser offers a unique design, solid handing and a fun driving experience. Despite its initial success, the PT Cruiser was discontinued by Chrysler in 2010.

Thermostat

  • Chrysler Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) indicate that overheating is a serious concern with numerous PT Cruiser model years. Auto Beef, which is a database containing complaints, TSBs and recalls, reports that thermostat replacement is a common repair to curb the PT Cruiser's overheating. A failing thermostat may result in overheating because it can no longer regulate the engine's temperature and coolant flow in the radiator.

Cylinder Head

  • Chrysler TSBs state that the PT Cruiser's cylinder head gasket is a trouble spot that may lead to overheating. A head gasket is responsible for sealing off an engine's combustion chambers and coolant passages. A failed head gasket can result in severe engine overheating.

Radiator Fan Assembly

  • MSN Auto reports that radiator fan failure is a common reason for overheating in the PT Cruiser. Radiator fan failure may lead to improper air flow throughout the radiator, which results in overheating.
