The 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse's data port is under the driver's side dashboard. It's to the right of the steering column, near the middle console. The data port is uncovered for easy access.
The Eclipse's data port is also called a Data Link Connector (DLC). This outlet allows you to access the vehicle's diagnostic systems, including the second-generation On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) system and the anti-lock braking system. Accessing these systems requires a hand-held scanning device and a diagnostic cable that ends a 16-pronged plug.
To use the DLC port, connect a diagnostic cable to your diagnostic hand-held. Connect the cable's 16-pronged plug to the DLC port and turn the scanner on. While other diagnostic systems are active within the Eclipse, the OBD-II system is used the most. The Eclipse's central computer interacts with a number of sensors, and once a persisting malfunction is detected, the dashboard's check engine light comes on.
