Catera Transmission Problems

While many complaints have been lodged against the Cadillac Catera, some drivers have recorded positive experiences. However, reports of transmission problems persist amid other repairs. Consumer feedback continues to emerge as drivers purchase the discontinued pre-owned Catera.

The Origins of the Catera

  • The Cadillac Catera originated from the European Opel Omega MV6. Rebranded as "the Caddy that zigs," the Cadillac Catera was produced from 1997-2001. It did not succeed long-term in the U.S. market.

Reports of Catera Transmission Problems

  • Because the Catera transmission does not have a dipstick, it can be difficult for owners to determine if the transmission fluid is low. Usually, a mechanic's assistance is necessary. Although numerous complaints about transmission problems in the Cadillac Catera emerged from owners, this problem often is listed as one among many others, and GM did not issue a recall due to transmission complaints.

Catera Recall

  • In the midst of complaints about problems with the Catera, GM did issue a recall due to timing belt problems. However, timing belt problems should not directly affect transmission performance. With the car's reliability problems, the troubled brand was discontinued.
