Is Ice on Auto AC Lines Bad?

Air conditioning (AC) is one of those luxuries you often don't think of maintaining until it is too late. Paying attention to telltale signs of trouble, like iced AC lines, can assure your system's readiness when those long, hot days arrive.

Significance

  • The significance of iced lines is that they are indicative of unwanted condensation in areas of your air conditioning system. There should not be enough moisture escaping from other parts of your system to allow water buildup to form into ice crystals.

Misconceptions

  • Many people believe air conditioning is simply cooling an environment. However, what it is mostly doing is altering the humidity of an environment. It does this by altering the amount of moisture, collecting it and getting rid of it. If your AC is working properly, the moisture will drain out of the car, rather than gathering and freezing on the lines.

Prevention/Solution

  • The most important thing you can do to keep the collected water draining properly is to keep the condensation drain at the bottom of your car clear and functioning. Consult your owner's manual to find the location of your drain and be sure you see it dripping after a long, hot drive when you used the AC.
