My Dodge Dakota Ran Out of Gas; I Filled It but Now It Won't Start

Running out of gas in your Dodge Dakota is bad enough on its own. Sometimes, you can fill the tank again and there will be no lasting ill effects aside from your own irritation. Other times, running out of gas can have more serious consequences.

Vehicles, especially newer ones with an electronic fuel injection system, are not designed to allow air into the fuel system, as happens when the tank runs dry. If your Dakota still won't start after refilling the tank, some repairs may be necessary.

  • Turn your ignition key to the run position (not the start position). Listen for the buzzing or humming noise, which indicates that the fuel pump is working. If there is no humming or buzzing noise, the fuel pump, which relies on the presence of gasoline in the gas tank for cooling and lubrication, may have burned out and needs replacement.

  • Leave the key in position for several seconds if the fuel pump seems to be working, based on the humming or buzzing noise. This should flush any air out of the fuel system. Try to start the vehicle and repeat a couple of times if necessary.

  • Replace the fuel filter if the Dakota still won't start or if it starts but runs rough, stutters or stalls. Dirt and sludge in the bottom of the tank may have been forced into the fuel system when the tank ran out, clogging the filter.
