Toyota Matrix Engine Problems

The Toyota Matrix is a crossover wagon based on the popular Corolla. The first Matrix debuted in 2003. It was redesigned in 2009 to match the redesigned Corolla. While Toyotas are known for their reliability, the Matrix is prone to several engine problems. However, most of them are minor and can be fixed at minimal cost.

Failure to Start

  • Two issues may prevent your engine from starting. Both of these issues apply to the 2005 model year Matrix, excluding the XRS model. The first issue is a computer glitch that can fixed by any dealer while under warranty. The service bulletin number is EG018-05. The second issue is a lack of fuel pressure after being parked for a long time. This can be remedied by setting the ignition to “RUN” until the car starts or by replacing the fuel pump.

Engine Knock

  • For model years 2003 through 2007, Matrix engines may experience squealing or knocking sounds emanating from their engine compartments. This is due to a faulty accessory belt tensioner.

Loose Gas Cap

  • If the gas cap is not fitted securely to the vehicle, the check engine light may come on. This may also cause the engine to run irregularly and make odd noises.

Faulty Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor

  • A faulty air/fuel ratio sensor in the engine may cause a check engine light and may need to be replaced. This affects Toyota Matrix model years 2005 and 2006.

Evaporator Emissions Leak

  • An evaporator emissions leak may cause a check engine light for model year 2005 Matrixes. This is caused by a small leak in the charcoal canister of the evaporator emissions system.

Bent Oil Baffle

  • Check engine lights for model years 2003 and 2004 may originate from the oil system. The oil fill nozzle used by some oil change shops may bend the oil baffle within the system causing a check engine light and possible engine noise.
