How to Check an Ignition Coil for Continuity

Continuity refers to the electrical resistance that an electrical wire has. For ignition coils, this is the electrical resistance in the coil. The higher the resistance, the less conductivity it has. For this reason, if you are having problems with your vehicle's ignition coils, the first troubleshooting step is to test the continuity of the coil using a voltmeter. If the coil is bad, you can buy replacement coils from most auto parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Voltmeter
  • Turn the dial on your voltmeter to the \"Ohms\" setting. It may also be denoted by a \"?\" (SI omega) sign on your voltmeter. Ohms will measure the continuity of the coils.

  • Touch one of the voltmeter leads to one of the terminals on the ignition coil (it doesn't matter which one). Then, touch the other lead on the voltmeter to the other terminal on the top of the ignition coil.

  • Read the display on the voltmeter. The meter should read between \"0\" and \"0.05\" Ohms. If it reads higher than \"0.05,\" then you need to replace the ignition coil.
