How to Troubleshoot Wipers That Are Not Returning on a Subaru

When the windshield wipers on your Subaru are not returning, there can be a few potential problems. Replacement components for Subaru's can be purchased from most auto parts stores or directly from a Subaru dealership. Replacing windshield wiper parts can get expensive if you don't know what's wrong. So, before you start replacing anything, troubleshoot the problem.

  • Open the fuse panel under the steering column by pulling down on the panel with your fingers.

  • Locate the fuse for the wiper motor using the fuse diagram on the underside of the fuse panel.

  • Pull the fuse for the wiper motor using the fuse pullers in the fuse panel.

  • Check the fuse. If it is burned, replace the fuse with a new fuse of the same amperage.

  • Open the hood and check the electrical connector running to the wiper motor. Verify that the wiper motor has power (the electrical connector is plugged in).

  • Turn the wipers on, if the wipers do not return to their original position, then the wiper motor has failed and needs to be replaced before the wipers will return. If the wiper motor starts, but the wipers will not return, there is a problem with the wiper linkage. Replace this component if necessary.
