How to Test an Expedition Window Switch

If a power window stops working on your Ford Expedition, you can expect the problem to lie with the fuse, the power window switch, the motor, the regulator or, in extreme cases, the wiring for the power circuit. Once you have tested the fuse and proven it to be in good working order, the next step in troubleshooting will involve testing the power window switch. Push the switch first, and if you hear any noise at all coming from the door’s interior, the switch is working. Otherwise, you can follow a simple procedure to test the switch itself.

Things You'll Need

  • Pocket screwdriver
  • Replacement power window switch
  • Ignition key
  • Pop the power window switch bezel loose from the door using the pocket screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the surrounding trim or the bezel itself when prying with the screwdriver.

  • Turn the bezel over and disconnect the wiring harness connector from the power window switch. The harness connector will have two tabs that need to be pushed in to allow the connector to release from the switch. You can push these in with the tip of the pocket screwdriver.

  • Connect the replacement power window switch and turn the ignition key to the run position. Push the switch to see if the window responds. If so, your existing power window switch is faulty. If the window does not respond, the problem lies elsewhere and you can reinstall your old power window switch and return the replacement switch for a refund.
