How to Troubleshoot a Dodge RAM 250 Transmission

The Dodge Ram 250 is a pickup truck manufactured by the Chrysler Corporation. The Ram belongs to a family of trucks with the same name, offering different options and vehicle specifications. While thought to be well made, some people have noticed that Dodge vehicles have known transmission problems. Eventually, you may also experience some of these issues. When that happens, you'll want to know how to troubleshoot your Dodge Ram 250 transmission.

  • Check to see if the transmission will downshift with the accelerator pressed to the floor. When you press on the accelerator, it should drop into a lower gear to facilitate the increased amount of fuel being added to the combustion chamber. No downshifting indicated that the throttle cable is out of adjustment and needs to be adjusted by a mechanic.

  • Check to see if your Dodge will start in gears other than park. If it will, then this indicates that your neutral start switch is malfunctioning. it needs to be serviced by a qualified Dodge dealership.

  • Check to see if you are leaking red fluid. This indicates a leaking or ruptured seal on the transmission. You'll need a qualified transmission specialist to service this issue.

  • Check to see if the transmission slips or shifts roughly. This could indicate that you have a low transmission fluid level. However, if the fluid level is normal, then the problem is internal to the transmission. Possible problems are damaged gear teeth or damaged synchronizers. Due to the nature of the problem, only a transmission shop knowledgeable about Dodge transmissions will be able to disassemble all of the internal gears and replace them.
