Take a shot at trying to troubleshoot air conditioning problems in your Chevy Impala. You may be surprised at how easy of a fix the problem is. You may save yourself a costly trip to the dealer or mechanic and learn something in the process.
Start by adjusting the dials that control the air conditioning. Make sure that they work properly, as they did before the air conditioning problems. If they don't feel right, with the right amount of resistance, then the problem is simply a blown fuse. If they work properly but have no effect on the air, then it is a control panel problem.
Locate the fuse box. The fuse box is located to the left of the steering wheel on the side of the dashboard. Pop off the panel cover, remove the fuse with a small pair of pliers and replace with a new fuse of the same wattage.
Find the control panel in a Chevy Impala by removing the instrument panel trim which in this vehicle extends to the entire length of the dashboard.
Unscrew one screw in each corner, and then pull the panel toward the back of the car and up at the same time to release tabs holding the panel in place. Pull the control panel out and unsnap the retainers at the ends. Unplug the electrical connection in the back of the control panel.
Check the blower motor next if the control panel or blown fuse are not to blame. Start the car and turn the air conditioning up to high and listen for the accompanying blowing sound. If it is not there, then the blower motor will need to be replaced.
Replace the blower motor in a Chevy Impala by removing the instrument panel trim and finding it on the passenger side of the vehicle. It will be cylindrical in shape with a white plastic fan attached to it. Unplug the electrical connection from the back.
